The Golden Boat Festival is closely connected to the Slovenian poet Srečko Kosovel (1904–1926). Due to poet’s premature death, his first collection of poems, “The Golden Boat”, remained unpublished. However, Kosovel was one of the most important Slovenian poets in the 20th century, not only because of his “Golden Boat poems”, but mostly because of his constructivist poems. More importantly, Kosovel is one of those rare poets who managed to fuse their artistic and human demeanour making a completely new quality. Instead of perceiving art and humanity as mere conceptual phenomena, Kosovel would see them as ethical phenomena that make sense only and as long as they are practiced in everyday life. This would also be the basis for a transformation of the ways in which human society operates. The Golden Boat Festival thus strives to explore the spaces that were opened by Srečko Kosovel, the poet who set the direction of our voyage.
From the very beginning, the Golden Boat Festival explores both spaces of the spirit as well as geographic spaces, searching for openness. One layer of this openness relies on the rich history of cultural exchanges between Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovenia that began at least in the 19th century.
In the last years, a sustainable Polish-Slovenian cooperation in the field of culture has resulted in publications of Slovenian authors in Polish translation. We are proud to present a bilingual poetry selection of Srečko Kosovel, Kalejdoskop. Izbrane pesmi/Wiersze wybrane (translated by Karolina Bucka Kustec), selected poems of Iztok Osojnik, Spodnie na niebie (translated by Marcin Warmuz), and the novel of a contemporary writer Maja Novak, Karfanaum, czyli as killed (translated by Wojciech Domachowski).
Polish readers shall also have the opportunity to get acquainted with the poetry collection Mech i srebro by a Slovenian poet Jure Detela (translated by Karolina Bucka Kustec; published by Instytut Mikołowski 2014). The book shall be presented during this year’s edition of the festival.
There are several Slovenian artists, as well as Polish and Czech poets and translators who participate at this year’s edition of the festival: a poet and literary scientist Alenka Jovanovski, a poet and organizer of the Mlade rime festival Dejan Koban, a poet, novelist and essayist Iztok Osojnik, a translator, poet and writer Tatjana Jamnik, a poet and songwriter Klemen Pisk, the translator of Jure Detela and Srečko Kosovel Karolina Bucka Kustec, Agnieszka Bedkowska-Kopczyk, Katarzyna Bednarska, Libor Doležán, Monika Gawlak, Jacek Lenkiewicz, Petr Mainuš, Maciej Melecki, Marta Podgórnik, Renata Putzlacher, Krzysztof Siwczyk, Kamil Szafraniec, Marcin Warmuz, Agnieszka Żuchowska-Arent, and others.
From 18th to 19th October the 11th International Translation Workshop shall take place in Bielsko-Biała, with participation of the above mentioned authors. The Polish speaking participants shall work on translations of two Slovenian “classical” authors who lucidely narrated the world from a woman perspective: a poet Saša Vegri (1934–2010) and a writer Zofka Kveder (1878–1926). Lectures on topics related to literary translation shall be presented at the workshop.
